What does CERUSE mean in Scrabble?
noun
historicalchemistry
White lead, a poisonous white pigment historically used in paint and as a cosmetic to whiten the skin.
Ceruse is produced from lead carbonate and was prized for centuries for its dense, opaque whiteness, making it a favourite base for both house paint and, notoriously, face powder worn by fashionable men and women in earlier centuries. Long-term use of ceruse as a cosmetic caused serious lead poisoning, and its cosmetic use eventually died out once the dangers of lead were understood. Painters similarly abandoned lead-based ceruse for titanium white and other safer pigments during the twentieth century. The word survives mainly in the history of art, fashion and toxicology.
