What does CENTAL mean in Scrabble?
noun
historicaltechnical
A unit of weight equal to one hundred pounds avoirdupois, once used chiefly for weighing grain.
The cental was introduced in the nineteenth century as a simpler alternative to older, irregular grain measures such as the quarter and the bushel, since it fixed the unit firmly at exactly one hundred pounds. Grain merchants and exchanges in Britain and North America used it to quote prices and settle contracts, particularly for wheat. Metric tonnes and standard hundredweights have since replaced it almost everywhere, so the cental now appears mainly in older trade documents and histories of weights and measures. It should not be confused with the metric quintal, which equals a different weight.
How CENTAL is used
Now largely historical, encountered chiefly in older trade records and accounts of grain markets.
- The old ledger priced wheat by the cental rather than the bushel.
- A cental of grain weighed exactly one hundred pounds.
- Merchants at the exchange still quoted contracts in centals in 1890.
- The historian explained how the cental simplified grain trading.
- Farmers were paid according to the number of centals delivered.
