A heavy wooden collar worn around the neck as a punishment in old China.
The cangue was a board with a hole for the neck, sometimes large enough to trap the wrists too, so that the wearer could not feed himself or lie down in comfort. Minor offenders wore it in public, and a sign on the board gave the name and the crime. The word reached English through Portuguese traders, who met the device in Macau and southern China.
