What does ARMET mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A close-fitting medieval helmet, developed in Italy, with hinged cheek-pieces that closed around the face and a small visor.
The armet appeared in the early fifteenth century and quickly became popular with knights because its hinged cheek-pieces let the wearer open the helmet fully to put it on or take it off, then lock it snugly around the head and neck for battle. Its rounded steel skull and small visor gave better protection and a closer fit than earlier open-faced helmets, though at some cost to ventilation and field of vision. Armorers across Italy and later other parts of Europe produced the armet well into the sixteenth century, often decorating the visor and cheek-pieces elaborately for wealthy patrons. Museum collections of arms and armor frequently display an armet as a centerpiece of their medieval holdings.
