What does ULSTER mean in Scrabble?
noun
British
A long, loose overcoat, traditionally belted, originally made from heavy frieze cloth.
An ulster hangs well below the knee and was designed to be roomy enough to wear over other clothing in cold, wet weather, often with a matching belt or cape at the shoulders. It takes its name from Ulster, the Irish province where the thick woollen frieze used for the coat was first produced, much as cardigan and mackintosh borrowed their names from a place or a person. The coat was popular for both men and women through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and still appears in period fiction and films.
