Typto comes from the Greek verb meaning I strike, which nineteenth-century grammar books placed first for pupils to conjugate through every tense and mood before tackling real texts. Because that one word dominated so many hours of drilling, British schoolboys turned it into a slang verb of their own, to typto, meaning to grind through Greek grammar in general. The word belongs firmly to school slang of an earlier era and is rarely met outside old memoirs or specialist word lists today. It survives now mainly as a piece of Scrabble trivia rather than as living vocabulary.
