What does THIRL mean in Scrabble?
verb
Scotsdialect
To pierce or bore a hole through something, or, in older Scots law, to bind a tenant to have their grain ground at a particular mill.
Older Scots and northern English writers used thirl for the physical act of piercing or drilling through a wall, a piece of wood or the earth itself, closely related to the more familiar word thrill, which originally meant much the same thing. Scots law also gave thirl a very different, specifically economic sense, binding tenants on an estate to grind their grain at the landowner's mill and pay a fee for the privilege, a system known as thirlage. A tenant thirled to a mill in this legal sense had no choice of miller, however inconvenient or costly that particular mill happened to be. Both senses have faded from ordinary use, so thirl now appears mainly in dialect glossaries, older Scots legal writing and historical fiction set in rural Scotland.
