What does THILL mean in Scrabble?

noun

historical

Either of the two long shafts of a cart or carriage between which a horse is harnessed to pull the vehicle.

A thill runs along each side of the horse, connecting the animal's harness to the body of the cart so it can pull and steer the load without a separate pole. Farmers and carriage builders once spoke of thill horses, meaning the single animal harnessed directly between the thills, as distinct from any additional horses hitched further ahead. The word survives today mainly in historical writing about horse-drawn transport and in a few farming communities that still use horse-drawn carts. A broken thill could leave a cart unusable, so wheelwrights kept spare timber on hand for quick repairs.

How THILL is used

Now mainly historical or regional, used in writing about horse-drawn carts and carriages and among communities that still work with horses.
