In tetany, nerves become overexcitable and muscles go into spasm, most visibly in the hands and feet. The usual causes are low calcium, a faulty parathyroid gland or a sudden change in the acidity of the blood. It is not the same illness as tetanus, which is an infection, although the two names look alike and the symptoms can seem similar.
