What does STOMA mean in Scrabble?
noun
botanymedical
A tiny pore in the surface of a leaf or stem that opens and closes to control the passage of gases and water vapour, or a surgically created opening on the body's surface.
A stoma on the underside of a leaf opens to let carbon dioxide in for photosynthesis and lets water vapour and oxygen escape, then closes again to limit water loss when conditions turn hot or dry, and a single leaf can carry many thousands of them. Two crescent-shaped guard cells surround each stoma and swell or shrink to control exactly how wide it opens, giving the plant fine control over its own gas exchange. Surgeons borrow the same word for a very different structure, an artificial opening connecting an internal organ, such as the bowel, to the outside of the body after certain operations. The plural of stoma is stomata in botany, though doctors more often simply add an s to make stomas.
How STOMA is used
A technical term used in botany for the pores of a leaf and in medicine for a surgically created body opening; context makes clear which sense is meant.
- Under the microscope, each stoma opened wider as the light grew brighter.
- The plant closed its stoma during the hottest part of the afternoon.
- Surgeons created a temporary stoma to allow the bowel to heal.
- A nurse showed the patient how to care for the new stoma.
- Botanists counted the stoma density on both sides of the leaf.
