What does STOGY mean in Scrabble?
noun
North Americaninformal
A long, thin, cheaply made cigar.
Stogy is chiefly an American term, thought to come from Conestoga, the Pennsylvania town whose wagon drivers were said to favor cheap, sturdy cigars during long hauls. The word can also be spelled stogie or stogey, and all three forms describe the same rough, inexpensive smoke rather than a refined, expensive cigar. In an older and now rare sense, stogy also named a heavy, coarse work boot, a meaning that has almost entirely dropped out of use. Today the cigar sense dominates, and it turns up mainly in older American fiction and detective stories, where a cheap stogy clamped in someone's teeth signals a rough, no-nonsense character.
