What does SOLERA mean in Scrabble?
noun
A method of ageing and blending fortified wines such as sherry, in which younger wine is gradually mixed with older wine held in tiers of casks, or a cask used in that system.
Solera describes both the fractional blending method and the row of stacked casks in which it takes place, a system developed in Spain for ageing sherry, Madeira and similar fortified wines. Only part of the oldest wine is drawn off at a time and the barrel is topped up from the tier above, so every bottle carries a trace of much older vintages blended in over the years. The technique gives such wines a more consistent character from year to year than wines aged and bottled from a single harvest.
How SOLERA is used
