What does SEWAN mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
Strings of small polished shell beads used as currency, ornaments, and ceremonial gifts among Native American peoples of the northeastern United States.
Sewan was made by grinding and drilling shell fragments, usually from whelk and quahog shells, into small cylindrical beads that were strung together in belts or ropes. Colonial traders in the seventeenth century accepted sewan alongside coin as a medium of exchange, and Native communities also used it in treaties and personal adornment. The spelling sewan is older; later writers more often used the related word wampum for the same beads.
