What does SEDILE mean in Scrabble?
noun
technical
One of a set of stone seats built into the wall of a church chancel for the clergy.
A sedile is usually found on the south side of the chancel in older churches, and it commonly appears as one of a group of three, together called sedilia. Builders often recessed each sedile into an arched niche and decorated it with carved stonework matching the rest of the sanctuary. The seats let officiating clergy rest during parts of a long service without leaving the chancel. Architectural historians use the singular sedile when describing just one seat rather than the whole set.
