The sapele is named after a port town in Nigeria from which its timber was first exported in quantity. The wood has a fine interlocking grain that shows a ribbon-like stripe when cut, and it is valued for furniture, doors, flooring and the backs of guitars. It is often sold as a cheaper alternative to true mahogany. The tree itself can grow very tall in the rainforest, and the species is now watched by conservation bodies.
