What does SANGA mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A small, temporary defensive wall or breastwork, usually built of stones, used for cover during fighting.
On the North-West Frontier and in other rugged terrain, soldiers and tribesmen built a sanga quickly from loose stones piled into a low wall, giving cover for a rifleman without the time needed to dig a proper trench. The word came into English from Pushtu during colonial military campaigns in Afghanistan and neighbouring regions, and older reports use the spellings sangar and sungar for the same structure. Troops might throw up a sanga in a single night on a ridge or hilltop to hold a defensive position until reinforcements arrived. The same spelling is also recorded for an unrelated breed of African cattle, a separate word that happens to look the same.
