A rurp is a tiny piton, little bigger than a stamp, hammered into a hairline crack in rock where nothing larger will fit, giving a climber only the slimmest hold for protection or aid. The name began as an acronym, Realized Ultimate Reality Piton, coined among American big-wall climbers, and later became an ordinary word for the tool itself. Because a rurp offers so little grip on the rock, it is normally used for aid climbing rather than to bear a serious fall.
