What does RATTEN mean in Scrabble?
verb
Britishhistorical
To sabotage or steal a fellow worker's tools or machinery in order to force compliance with trade union rules or to punish someone who breaks a strike.
To ratten someone was to damage, hide or steal the tools, belts or parts of machinery belonging to a workman who had defied a trade union, most often during nineteenth-century disputes in the cutlery and engineering trades of northern England. The aim was not simple theft but coercion: a worker who found his tools missing or his machine disabled could not earn his wage until he agreed to fall into line. The practice gave its name to a wave of prosecutions in Sheffield in the 1860s, after which the word passed into general use for any secret sabotage meant to enforce discipline within a trade. Today the verb survives mainly in historical writing about labour disputes rather than in current speech.
