What does RAGGA mean in Scrabble?
noun
music
A style of Jamaican dance music, derived from reggae, in which a DJ chants or improvises lyrics over an electronic, sample-based backing track.
Ragga grew out of reggae in the 1980s as producers swapped live instruments for digital drum machines and synthesized basslines, called riddims, over which a DJ toasts rather than sings a fixed melody. This digital backing is what most clearly separates ragga from roots reggae, which still leans on guitar, bass and drums played by a full band. The style spread quickly from Jamaican sound systems into British and international dancehall culture, and it later fed directly into jungle and drum and bass, genres that sampled ragga vocals over faster breakbeats.
