What does RABATO mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A large, stiff, wired or lace-trimmed collar worn standing up around the neck, fashionable in Europe from the late sixteenth to the mid seventeenth century.
A rabato stood up stiffly around the back and sides of the neck, held in shape by wire or starch and often trimmed with fine lace, framing the face above a low, wide neckline. It served much the same purpose as the older ruff but sat flatter and could be tilted or angled, giving portrait sitters of the period a distinctive silhouette. Servants and dressmakers needed considerable skill to starch and pin a rabato correctly before it could be worn to court.
