Builders used putlogs when putting up scaffolding against a masonry wall. Because the far end sits in a gap left in the brickwork, the scaffold needs no second row of poles on the wall side. When the work is finished, the holes that held each putlog are filled in with mortar and brick. The word is also seen as putlock.
