In Australia a possum is a nocturnal climber with a grasping tail, often seen on roofs and in garden trees at night. In North America the same name is a casual shortening of opossum, an unrelated animal famous for lying motionless when threatened. That habit gave English the phrase to play possum, meaning to pretend to be asleep or dead in order to avoid trouble. The word was borrowed from an Algonquian language.
