What does PONTY mean in Scrabble?
noun
technical
An iron rod used by glassblowers to hold and shape hot glass after it is cut from the blowpipe.
A ponty is dipped in molten glass and stuck to the base of a piece so the blower can keep working the open end, and it is also spelled pontil or punty depending on the workshop. The scar it leaves on the underside of blown glass, called a pontil mark, is one of the ways collectors date old pieces by hand. Modern factories increasingly grind the mark away, but on hand-blown work it is left as a sign of the technique.
