A pavis was frequently planted in the ground or propped on a stand so that a crossbowman could crouch behind it while reloading a weapon that was slow to prepare, since a crossbow could not be fired nearly as quickly as a bow. Some armies employed a dedicated shield-bearer whose only job was to carry and position the pavis for the crossbowman he protected. Painted with coats of arms or bright designs, a pavis also served to identify a company of soldiers on a crowded medieval battlefield.
