Sailors and shipwrights picked oakum by unravelling worn rope into loose strands, then packed it into the gaps between a ship's planks and sealed it with tar to keep water out. Picking oakum by hand was also assigned as tedious, punishing labour to prisoners and workhouse inmates in the nineteenth century. The material's coarse, fibrous texture made it well suited to plugging small leaks and stopping draughts.
