Nankin takes its name from the Chinese city of Nanjing, once spelled Nanking, and was a popular fabric for trousers and summer clothing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Cloth made in imitation elsewhere, and clothes cut from it, took the same name. It can mean the yellowish colour too, and a blue-and-white Chinese porcelain was likewise known as nankin.
