What does MUNGO mean in Scrabble?
noun
historicaltechnical
A cheap, coarse fabric made from waste wool reclaimed by shredding old rags, felted cloth, and knitted garments, once produced in large quantities by English woollen mills.
Nineteenth-century Yorkshire mills built an entire industry around mungo, tearing worn-out woollen garments and scraps of felted cloth back down into raw fibre that could be respun and rewoven into cheap new cloth. The process saved money by recycling material that would otherwise have gone to waste, though cloth made from mungo was generally weaker and less durable than fabric woven from fresh wool. Mungo differed from a related recycled fibre called shoddy mainly in the type of waste material used and in the shorter length of the resulting fibres. Both words eventually gained a wider figurative life in English, with shoddy in particular coming to mean anything cheaply or carelessly made.
