What does MALKIN mean in Scrabble?
noun
archaicdialect
An old name for a cat, a scarecrow, a slovenly woman, or a mop made of rags on a stick.
Malkin began as a pet form of the name Matilda, and the name drifted into ordinary speech with several unrelated jobs. Cooks and bakers used a bundle of rags on a pole to sweep out the ashes of an oven, farmers dressed up a ragged figure to frighten crows, and in the north of England the word could even stand for a hare or a cat. The same root survives in the longer grimalkin, an old term for a cat. Today the word appears mainly in historical writing and in word games.
