What does LEWIS mean in Scrabble?
noun
technical
A metal device fitted into a hole cut in a large stone block so that a crane or hoist can grip and lift it.
A lewis is made of two or three interlocking, wedge-shaped pieces that are inserted into a specially cut dovetail hole in the top of a stone; when a pin is dropped through them, the pieces spread and grip the sides of the hole so the block can be raised without ropes or straps around it. Stonemasons and quarry workers have used the lewis for centuries to move heavy blocks safely during the construction of buildings, bridges, and monuments. The tool takes its name from the lewis hole it is designed to fit, and both are still used in traditional stonework today.
