Hunters and mahouts in India and Southeast Asia constructed a kheda near a river or forest clearing, then drove a herd of elephants toward it so the animals could be caught and later tamed for work. Building and running a kheda required many people working together over several days, funneling the herd without injuring the animals. The practice largely died out as conservation law restricted the capture of wild elephants, so kheda now appears mostly in historical accounts. The word came into English from Hindi and is also spelled keddah in some older sources.
