A googol is far larger than any quantity found in the physical world, dwarfing even estimates of the number of atoms in the observable universe, so mathematicians use it mainly as a vivid example of an enormous number rather than a figure that occurs in real measurements. The term was coined in 1920 by a nine-year-old boy, Milton Sirotta, at the suggestion of his uncle, the mathematician Edward Kasner, who wanted a playful name for such an unimaginably large figure.
