What does FUSIL mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A light flintlock musket carried by infantry soldiers, especially fusiliers, from the late seventeenth through the eighteenth century.
This weapon was lighter and safer to carry near stores of gunpowder than the earlier matchlock musket, since it used a flint-and-steel mechanism instead of a burning cord. Regiments issued with a fusil became known as fusiliers, a name several British and other regiments kept long after the weapon itself went out of use. Soldiers valued the quicker reload and lower risk of accidental ignition, which made it standard issue for guards near artillery and ammunition wagons.
