A foehn forms when moist air is forced up one side of a mountain, drops its rain or snow, and then descends the far side as a warmer, drier wind. The effect is best known from the Alps, where a foehn can raise temperatures sharply within hours and melt snow quickly. Meteorologists use foehn as a general term for this kind of rain-shadow warming, and similar winds elsewhere carry local names such as the chinook in North America.
