A sheet of papier-mache or similar material pressed against a page of set type to form a mould, used in stereotype printing to cast a metal printing plate.
A flong was made by pasting layers of soft, absorbent paper together and beating or pressing them firmly onto a made-up page of type, taking a detailed impression of every letter. Once dried, the flong served as a mould into which molten metal was poured to cast a curved stereotype plate, allowing newspapers to print the same page on several presses at once. The technique using flongs was central to high-speed newspaper printing for much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries before it was replaced by offset and digital methods.
