What does FENKS mean in Scrabble?
noun
historicalnautical
The greasy solid refuse left after oil has been rendered from whale blubber.
Whalers boiled the blubber on deck or ashore to draw off the valuable oil, and fenks was what remained afterward: a foul-smelling solid waste rather than a liquid. Nothing on a whaling voyage went entirely to waste, so fenks found a second life as a crop fertiliser and, oddly, as one ingredient used in making the pigment Prussian blue. The word is almost always used in this plural-looking form, with no separate singular in ordinary use, in the same way that dregs or lees name a leftover rather than a countable thing.
How FENKS is used
Historical; a whaling-industry term for the leftover solids of blubber-boiling, now met mainly in accounts of the trade.
- The pit behind the tryworks was heaped with fenks.
- Farmers bought the fenks cheaply to spread on their fields.
- The smell of fenks hung over the whole harbour.
- Dye-makers once prized fenks for the blue pigment made from it.
- A good boiling left little more than fenks and ash.
