What does ECARTE mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A card game for two players, originating in nineteenth-century France, played with a thirty-two-card pack.
Ecarte gets its name from the French word for discarded, because each player may exchange unwanted cards from their hand for fresh ones dealt from the pack. It was especially fashionable in French and English drawing rooms during the nineteenth century and appears often in novels of that period as a game played for stakes. The pack used runs from seven up to the ace, rather than a full fifty-two-card deck. Although rarely played today, ecarte is still listed in reference books on card games and mentioned in period fiction.
