What does DWANG mean in Scrabble?
noun
ScotsNew Zealand
A short piece of timber fixed between two upright studs to brace a wall.
Dwang began as a Scots word for a strut or bar and travelled with Scottish builders to New Zealand, where it became the everyday term for the same piece of timber, equivalent to what English carpenters call a nog or noggin. In a stud wall the dwang runs horizontally between the vertical studs, stopping them from twisting and giving something solid to fix a skirting board or shelf to. Older dictionaries also record a dwang as a kind of crowbar or heavy wrench, a sense now rare outside word lists.
How DWANG is used
