What does CULCH mean in Scrabble?
noun
regional
Broken shells, stones and rubbish spread on the sea floor to give oyster larvae a surface to attach to.
Culch is the material, usually old oyster and mussel shells mixed with gravel, that oyster farmers scatter over a bed so that free-swimming larvae have something hard to settle on and grow. Without culch the tiny larvae, called spat, cannot fix themselves to the bottom and the bed produces far fewer oysters. The word is also used more loosely in some regional speech for rubbish or debris of any kind. Its main technical use, though, remains in shellfish farming, where culch is laid down and monitored much as a farmer prepares soil.
How CULCH is used
