What does CHACO mean in Scrabble?
noun
historical
A stiff, cylindrical military cap with a peak, the same headgear elsewhere called a shako.
A chaco sits high and rigid on the head, usually topped with a plume, a badge, or a decorative cord, and it once marked infantry and band uniforms across nineteenth-century Europe. The Hungarian name entered English through military fashion that spread outward from Central Europe, and chaco and shako simply name the same design borrowed at different points. Marching bands and ceremonial guards still wear a version of the chaco today, long after ordinary soldiers switched to lighter caps. The word chaco should not be confused with the unrelated place name for a lowland plain in South America, which comes from a different language entirely.
