What does CESTUS mean in Scrabble?
noun
historicalliterary
A hand covering of leather bands, sometimes weighted with metal, worn by boxers in ancient Greece and Rome.
A cestus wrapped a fighter's hand and forearm in tough leather thongs, and some versions were studded or loaded with metal to make blows far more damaging than bare fists, a brutal feature of ancient boxing and public games. Beyond the sporting sense, poets also used cestus for the mythical girdle of Aphrodite, or Venus, said to make anyone who wore it irresistibly attractive, a very different meaning sharing the same word. Homer and later classical writers both used the word in this second, decorative sense. Today it appears mainly in histories of ancient sport and in classical literature.
