The same spelling also appears for the Brazil nut, the oily three-cornered seed of a tall Amazonian tree, sold roasted or raw. Old travel narratives and trade records from the age of exploration usually spell the word brasil rather than brazil. Today the spelling brazil has mostly replaced brasil, which now survives chiefly in historical texts.
