What does BOYAU mean in Scrabble?
noun
historicaltechnical
A narrow zigzag trench used to connect one fortification or trench line to another.
A boyau is dug at an angle rather than in a straight line, so that an enemy firing along its length cannot rake more than a short stretch of it at a time. The word came into English from French military engineering and became common during the First World War, when armies linked front-line trenches to rear positions with networks of these narrow passages. A boyau was built for movement and supply rather than for fighting, unlike the fire trench it connected to.
